At a time of year when most of us would prefer to be in front of a warm fire in the evenings, Shamus Westwood has chosen to ‘Gump around the UK’ coastline, walking around 8000 miles to raise money for children with terminal cancer. Shamus has had a tough time, he survived cancer and was 4 months in remission when he but found himself homeless on the streets of Folkestone. On his journey he has received support in the form of hot meals and food for his dogs but he has usually slept in a tent outside.
On Christmas Eve, Shamus set off from Leas Cliff Pavilion, Folkestone with his 6 dogs, ‘the cubs’ to walk around the coastline. He hopes to finish the route and return to Folkestone in about 2 1/2 years time. His mission is to raise £100,000 to send children with terminal cancer on the trip of a lifetime. There is a ‘Just Giving’ page: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/gumparound.
Julie O’Gorman met him at the Fishbourne Terminal and kindly provided transport.
Wightlink Ferries kindly agreed to give Shamus and the cubs complimentary tickets and he arrived in Fishbourne on the morning of the 20th February. You can follow Shamus Westwood on social media @GumpAroundTheUK and hear the podcast of him on the Vectis Radio broadcast goo.gl/LLHk4R following the interview by Caroline Diamond and Mo White broadcast on Thursday 22nd Feb from 2pm]. Please stop and say hello to Shamus if you see him gumping around the coastline and please donate to his page. This was Shamus and his dogs walking on Appley beach in Ryde. And here he is in Shanklin. Shamus and his ‘cubs’ were joined by supporters walking on Small Hope beach in Shanklin. He stopped at The Salix Beach Cafe for refreshsments – they donated provisions and made a generous donation to the cause. And there was time for a small show of affection! Thanks to Caroline Diamond for providing the words. https://www.facebook.com/CarolineDiamondMarketing/
