At a time of year when most of us would prefer to be in front of a warm fire in the evenings, Shamus Westwood has chosen to ‘Gump around the UK’ coastline, walking around 8000 miles to raise money for children with terminal cancer. Shamus has had a tough time, he survived cancer and was 4 months in remission when he but found himself homeless on the streets of Folkestone. On his journey he has received support in the form of hot meals and food for his dogs but he has usually slept in a tent outside.
On Christmas Eve, Shamus set off from Leas Cliff Pavilion, Folkestone with his 6 dogs, ‘the cubs’ to walk around the coastline. He hopes to finish the route and return to Folkestone in about 2 1/2 years time. His mission is to raise £100,000 to send children with terminal cancer on the trip of a lifetime. There is a ‘Just Giving’ page: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/gumparound.

Julie O’Gorman met him at the Fishbourne Terminal and kindly provided transport.
Wightlink Ferries kindly agreed to give Shamus and the cubs complimentary tickets and he arrived in Fishbourne on the morning of the 20th February. You can follow Shamus Westwood on social media @GumpAroundTheUK and hear the podcast of him on the Vectis Radio broadcast goo.gl/LLHk4R following the interview by Caroline Diamond and Mo White broadcast on Thursday 22nd Feb from 2pm].

Please stop and say hello to Shamus if you see him gumping around the coastline and please donate to his page. This was Shamus and his dogs walking on Appley beach in Ryde.

And here he is in Shanklin.

Shamus and his ‘cubs’ were joined by supporters walking on Small Hope beach in Shanklin. He stopped at The Salix Beach Cafe for refreshsments – they donated provisions and made a generous donation to the cause. And there was time for a small show of affection!

How glad I am I took up the opportunity to be photographed by Graham Reading. When Graham arrived, he was rather bemused to see the log I’d chosen to recline on for my Valentine photo-shoot. It jutted out precariously over the river Yar, and to get into position I had to do something very similar to walking the plank. Once I was sitting comfortably Graham realised he would have to perch in another riverbank tree to photograph me. The light was fading fast but thankfully Graham shared my creative vision, managing to make me feel both relaxed and confident, even when there was a chance that the pair of us might end up falling in the river (not too deep, but very muddy). I greatly admired his skill and determination to get the perfect shot!

Launch of #WDYT [What Do You Think] in Ryde on the Isle of Wight – a Government-backed campaign that has proven that there is a direct link between how digitally active a town is and their high street footfall.
“As part of our ambitious regeneration plans for the Island, we are keen to emphasise the role of successful town centres in shaping the future of the Isle of Wight”, says Cabinet member for regeneration and business development, Councillor Wayne Whittle.
“This campaign is a trailblazing opportunity not only to engage shoppers with their local high street through social media, but also to support our local businesses in a very practical way to improve their business reach, their online presence and their digital influence with their customers.”

Ventnor Winter Gardens was the venue for a traditional Robert Burns supper, with poetry, music and speeches celebrating his life, as well as the customary ‘Address to The Haggis,’ and a procession around the dining room. Piper John Brodie played throughout the evening, joined by other local musicians. The food was amazing and there was no shortage of tartan! Katrina and I took a stand at Saturday’s event – Pre-Screening Health and Wellbeing boutique experience – organised by Sarah Brown at Ventnor Winter Gardens. Our stand was for Katrina’s coaching business – www.focuscoach.biz – where she was a speaker, and also promoting her Mindfulness Taster Sessions, and my www.grahamreadingphotography.com business with the relevant aspects of my ‘non-photoshopped’ photography being discussed! We watched the #embrace film after, and I took a few [understatement] photos!
